Sleep is easy in National Library

National Library at Victoria Street is a magnificent architecture that opened to the public in July 2005. It is a unique modern state-of-the-art library that meets the challenges of the 21st century with the power to inform, educate and entertain.

National Library hopes to serve as an ideal library with modern facilities and a unique and rich collection that nourishes the citizenry with information and knowledge that inspires discovery, exploration, adoption and learning.

Funding from taxpayer money went towards state of the art information technology and many sub locations in the building - drama center, research and reference library, lending library, open plaza and performance areas, Exhibition hall/gallery, gardens and terraces, retail spaces such as café, generous open landscape throughout the building and a rooftop garden.

But best part is, library environment is very comfortable. Many taxpayer dollars went towards the tech and architecture, but now people use it as very comfortable sleeping area instead!

Library is so comfortable, you can even use whole chair as bed!

The librarians routinely go and wake sleepyheads up. Especially in the Reference sections.

When I sleep in loo cubicle, I sit on toilet bowl with my trousers & undies down (can shit and sleep at same time) and my head resting on my forearms. But problem is, after sleep, there will be a red mark on my forehead...so when I walk out, everyone will know I was doing...

Wah...they don't want to waste their own air-con at home I guess. That's probably one of the reasons.

Sleep in the toilet? Some toilets DO smell bad, for your information!

There's nothing wrong with sleeping in the library. After you go through like 100 pages, taking a 15 min nap before you go onto the next 100 pages is justified.

When I was in college, it wasn't unusual to have ppl taking catnaps every 1-200 pages. You'd go to the undergrad library and 1 out of every 5 people would be sleeping.

Hi 7-8, I respectfully disagree. A college library is a different setting compared to a public space. Agree that rests are needed. But the issue is really about other customers who need seats and can't get one. When a person close their eyes to sleep, other customers aren't happy (how to tell if it's 10 sec or 10 min?) So then they complain, or worse case they pick a fight. The time taken to handle such cases represents opportunity costs and inefficiencies (it's your tax money being wasted). So we're talking about showing consideration for others. Customers can rest somewhere else (like a bench outside) and leave the seat for others. I'm sure over time the gesture would become custom and lead to reciprocity. Thanks for sharing your views. Cheers [Views expressed here are my solely my own and not of my employer]
