She sits and watches the world go by

I have seen her many times, always sitting against the wall and watching the crowd go by. She is there every night, sometimes alone, sometimes with a little girl.

People walk past and don't even look. People come to Orchard Road to do their shopping, not to watch others.

Nobody even stops for a second. Everyone is busy doing their own thing. Holding hands, smoking, grabbing each others' bottoms.

She watches the people go by. There is an endless variety of characters.

They look hungry. They might not have eaten since morning.

They look very sad.

All they have with them is a bottle of water.

So I went up to her and asked her, "why do you sit here so often? Do you have anything else to do?"

"I have no job," she replies. I feel sad for her. She says she cannot find any job because the economy is bad.

"Don't you have any family members to help?"

She is silent.

But then I realized, she has no job, but she is not a street beggar. There are no coins around her. No cups. No overturned hats. She is not looking for money. She is just watching the world go by.

Because if you keep watching, something is sure to happen. And jobs may appear out of nowhere.

well, whatever it is, I believe she chose to have her life run like that everyday. reason being? who knows. and maybe, just maybe, we are in no position to judge her. be it good or bad. just my balls of thoughts.

i'm 16 years old and i'm waiting for my N level results and subsequently will be doing my Os next year. i'm working at the meridian as a banquet waiter for $5.50 an hour. the day that i applied, there were 4 aunties her age that applied to. the thing about the place is, the management isn't very particular about the people they hire. the 4 aunties looked very much less abled than me, but they still got the job.. if this auntie in your post actually gets off the floor and makes an effort to look for a job rather than apathetically blaming the economy, she probably wouldn't be so sad.

If international travel is not on your itinerary, look to your local shops for cuckoo clocks. Most shops that sell clocks will have at least a couple styles of cuckoo clocks. Also, if you are interested in purchasing an older clock, check out the antique stores in your area or visit local flea markets to see what your search will reveal.
